Activity | Responding to the identification of the Knightsridge area of Livingston as one of high urban deprivation, the Knightsridge Initiative was formed in 1984 to improve the physical and social environment of the area.
The Initiative brought local persons and voluntary and statutory organisations under one co-ordinating body in an attempt to address issue such as high unemployment, poor housing, community alienation, vandalism and the lack of recreational opportunities. The Initiative was chaired by the Livingston Development Corporation's Deputy Chairman and involved representatives from LDC's Community Development, the Knightsridge 4 Tenants Association, the Police, Save the Children, Knightsridge Community Council, Inveralmond High School, the Social Works Department, the Health Board and Knightsridge Unemployed Group.
The Initiative went on to co-ordinate the urban re-planning of the area, and formed several groups and enterprises, such as the Vocational Training Project, which provided training in catering, clerical and administration skills.
Having contributed to the regeneration schemes of Knightsridge through community input, the Initiative did not long survive the cessation of refurbishment programmes. |
