Activity | Craigshill Mall was completed in the 1968 as part of Craigshill Distrct Centre (including offices and public buildings). As such, the mall was located at the centre of Craigshill, the first district of Livingston New Town to be built. The mall acted as a 'temporary town centre' before the completion of the Almondvale Shopping Centre in 1977. The Mall is reputed to be the first such covered shopping area in Scotland. However, even during the 1960s there were problems with maintenance and its general condition deteriorated. With the completion of Almondvale Shopping Centre the mall llost most of its custom base and its general condition continued to decline. Half of the mall was demolished and replaced with a free standing shop in 1977. It has been refurbished several times during its lifetime. |
