Activity | Livingston Football Club was founded in 1943 as Ferranti Thistle, a works team at Ferranti Engineering Company. In 1969 they acquired the City Park ground in Edinburgh, but remained an amateur club until 1972 when they joined the Scottish Football Association. In 1974, they entered the 2nd Division of the Scottish Football League.
The City Ground was not up to the standard required by the Scottish Football Association standards and the club moved to the Meadowbank stadium, which was offered to them by Edinburgh City Council. A name change followed (Corporate names were not allowed as part of team names) and the club became Meadowbank Thistle.
The team became a limited company in 1993 and faced severe financial difficulties. In the face of opposition from fans, the team moved from Edinburgh to Livingston in 1995, and changed its name to Livingston Football Club. Since 1995 the club has been based at Almondvale Stadium, built in conjunction with Livingston Development Corporation (LDC). When the LDC wound up in 1996 ownership of the stadium passed to West Lothian Council. The stadium has been through several name changes but, as of 2013, has reverted to the original name, Almondvale Stadium. |
