AdminHistoryThe Marketing Department was responsible for attracting firms and industry to Livingston. It co-ordinated with several bodies to sell the appeal of Scotland to international corporations. Bodies liaised with for this purpose included the Scottish Office, the Scottish Council for Development and Industry, the Scottish Development Agency and, from 1981 onwards, Locate in Scotland. Within the UK the department targeted firms in the South East of England and key sectors such as electronics and health care. From 1973 all Scottish New Towns jointly shared the expense of running an office in central London so that they could target industrialists reluctant to make the journey north. Initially, Halls of Edinburgh were employed as the marketing body for the Corporation, but the Corporation later brought this function inhouse to its Publicity Office, and then, later, Marketing which was part of Industrial Development and Estate/Commercial Directorate. The Marketing Department attended trade exhibitions, contacted multi-national companies, hosted visits and made personalised presentations; it also produced videos, brochures, information packs and coordinated the Corporation's activity in the press. A key marketing slogan, 'Make it in Livingston', was used for over twenty years and appeared in diverse a place as Japanese newspapers and on the London Underground. "Make it Livingston" replaced the earlier advertising slogan "Livingston: The Pacemaker."
