AdminHistoryThe Development Corporation was not responsible for the erection of schools in Livingston, this was the responsibility of the local authority (from 1975-1996, Lothian Regional Council). If the local authority deemed there was the need for a school in a particular area, they approached the Corporation and a plot was agreed. Sites for proposed schools were sold to Schools Authorities (usually Lothian Regional Council) at an independently assessed valuation by the District Valuer. The valuation was based on a market evaluation of the ground for housing purposes. If the site was disposed of as a school site then it was usually stipulated that it could not be developed as anything else without express permission of the Development Corporation.

As managers of non-residential property the Commercial Directorate arranged the sale of premises for worship, or disposed of land to bodies wanting to buy whilst Legal and Administration attended to the legal and administrative tasks associated with the sale of land and property.

ScopeandContent24 legal and administrative files detailing the process of sale of plots of land within Livingston to School Authorities (West Lothian and Midlothian County Council until 1975, then Lothian Regional Council). Files include correspondence with solicitors/agents, internal memos, copies of maps and deed plans as well as any other administrative and legal papers regarding the plot in question. As the Corporation retained its right to act as the feu superior, it kept files for many years after the initial sale as prospective buyers contacted them regarding any limitations of use that might exist on the plot.
