AdminHistory | There were 721 properties in existence when the area that was to become Livingston was designated in 1962. Excluding local authority housing, which numbered some 207 properties, the Corporation acquired this property by negotiation and based on market value. By 1977, this number, mainly through planned demolition, had been reduced to 88 pre-designation properties that were not owned by the Local Authority.
For those properties not demolished the Corporation let the property to caretakers or various enterprises until it had decided what to do with the property (sale to a private individual, or conversion for use as a community centre) One example of a group using a building prior to its development was the Livingston Art Group which used Howden House stables. This, in turn, inspired the conversion of the stables into what was eventually to be Howden Parks Arts Centre. |
