TitleDepartment Reference 26 - Health centres, hospitals
Date1988-1997
AdminHistoryAt the time of the wind-up of the Corporation there were four health centres in Livingston. One each in Craigshill, Carmondean, Dedridge and Howden. The main general hospital in West Lothian is also located in Livingston, in Howden. This was opened in 1989 and replaced the nearby Bangour General Hospital which shut down. The first health centres in the town were held in converted houses. The first Howden Health Centre was replaced by a health centre integrated into the general hospital. The building of the former Howden Health Centre was bought back by the LDC and converted to a day centre for the elderly - Braid House.

In the 1960s the NHS used the opportunity of a completely new town to try the 'Livingston Experiment' - an integrated approach to health that more closely involved the work of general hospitals in community health care. This experiment was intended to overcome the divisive 'tripartite' system that had developed in the NHS.
