AdminHistory | Administration and Legal operated as one department until 1990, when it was split and the two new departments, Legal, and Administration, were subsumed into the new Financial and Management Services Directorate. Prior to 1990 there had been a Secretary and Legal Adviser heading the department as Chief Officer. However, given the increasing separation in professional responsibilities between the two functions and the need for specialisation, they operated largely independently of one another by the late 1980s with a separate Depute for each section. There were two Secretary and Legal Advisors, J Kelly from 1962-1980, and J Ritchie from 1980-1990.
The Legal Department was responsible for leases, disposals, acquisitions, debt recovery, contract acceptances and disputes, issuing superiors consents, safekeeping of Corporation title deeds, acting as secretariat to the board and any other legal work required by the Corporation. |
