TitleSheltered Housing for the elderly
Date1977-1994
TermResidential care homes
AdminHistoryThe demographic constitution of Livingston was affected by its emphasis on attracting residents who would be able to contribute to the growth of the economy of the New Town. As such, at first the Corporation did not have to pay undue attention to providing housing for the elderly. However, as the first residents grew older, elderly residents moved to the town of their own accord, and the demographics of Scotland as a whole became older, there became a need to provide adequate housing for elderly persons in Livingston. Restondene, consisting of purpose built sheltered housing in the Deans area, was opened in 1978. In 1983, based on advice from the Scottish Development Department a guideline of 50 sheltered places per 1000 of the population was recommended. This was adjusted in 1987 to 50 housing units per 1000 of the population.
