AdminHistory | In 1982 members of various caring professions operating within the Livingston area were increasingly aware of a number of young people who were homeless or at the risk of becoming homeless. As a result of this Livingston Action for Teenage Homeless (LATH) was set up in 1982 to produce a report, and found a high incidence of unemployment, over-crowding, and reports of young people sleeping rough. LATH identified the need to make a wide range of housing services available, including a counselling and information service and emergency accomodation.
The Aberlour Child Care Trust had been working on a similar proposal for the Livingston area and joined with LATH in visiting organisations through the UK to help complete the LATH report.
As a result of the LATH report an Open Door counselling and information services was opened in 1983, the service offered one-to-one or small groups counselling and out of hours emergency contact. The group went on to open emergency housing, including an emergency hostel in Craigshill and supported flats throughout the Livingston area.
Livingston Development Corporation provided management advice and the use of tenancies in their housing stock. As of 2012 Open Door is still a functioning, registered charity. |
