AdminHistory | Craigshill was one of the first areas of the Livingston New Town to be occupied, and its main phase was completed in 1964. However, there were soon multiple indicators of social deprivation.
Inspired by the Knightsridge Initiative, the Craigshill Initiative was setup in 1987 with the object of involving local people, Lothian Regional Council, West Lothian District Council, Tenants Associations, the Ecumenical Church, the police and the Health Board, amongst others, to achieve improvement in the level of education, health, and the relief of poverty in the Craigshill area. The Initiative was to achieve these aims through community participation and the setting up of a variety of local groups and organisations that aimed to improve community facilities, social welfare, employment, and housing and the environment.
Enterprises undertaken by the initiative included a drop-in creche that allowed young parents to return to education and Craigshill Initiative Enterprises Ltd., which employed local long-term unemployed in cleaning communal stairwells. They also collaborated with the Knightsridge Initiative on a Vocational Training Project. |
