AdminHistory | The Corporation's initial focus, when it came to the new community of Livingston, was to help groups, on the main social, that might want to form, usually by arranging the provision of facilities and by giving small grants for equipment. As the Livingston grew older, and its social problems grew more complex, the Community Development Department took a more pro-active role. In later years the Corporation provided guidance, training and funds for projects that sought to alleviate some of the social issues that had developed in areas such as Craigshill and Knightsridge. In many cases Corporation property was provided at nominal rates. Staff of the Community Development Department sat on many management committees and boards of local groups. Such community groups covered a wide range of activities, from arranging the annual Livingston Festival, to providing emergency hostel accommodation for young people who had found themselves homeless. |
