AdminHistoryIn 1963 a special conference of church representatives on the New Town of Livingston took place - the result was the formation of The Committee on the Approaches of the Churches to the New Town of Livingston, which represented the eight churches that took part in the Scottish Churches council. The Committee held eight meetings in two years - at the time no other body of inter-church cooperation received such attention.

The committe came to see itself as having three objectives:
1) to enable the sharing of buildings for worship in congregatoinal life.
2) The provision of facilities for ecumenical action that would serve the community at neighbourhood level.
3) To provide an ecumenical centre in the town centre of Livingston.

Plans were developed for an ecumenical centre, but with a lack of resources, it was decided to build a traditional church instead that could be used by all demoninations.

The committee's main area of work was to ensure that the various denominations of churches could work together so that, at least in Livingston , there was "the Church" rather than "the Churches", as such it acted the oversight body where each of the churches could meet to monitor the work that was ongoing in Livingston.
