AdminHistoryNew Beginnings: Breaking Through to Unity, was Maitland's major work about the ecumenical experiment. It combined memoirs of his early years in Livingston with discourse on the church and the ecumenical movement. The book also showcases Maitland's eagerness to create an inclusive, supportive society. The book appears to have its origins in Maitland's earlier writings on the New Town, which were published in a variety of pamphlets and articles in the 1970s and 1980s.

Despite ongoing ill health, Maitland finished the book in 1995 and submitted it to St Andrew's Press, Edinburgh. Negotiations over the publication of the book, and editing by the publishing house, were still ongoing when Maitland died in 1996. The book was then taken through to publication under the guidance of Maitland's widow, Elizabeth.
