AdminHistoryLiving Stones: Unity Where it Matters was developed by Maitland in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It was his first published piece on Livingston that exceeded the length of a short article. The pamphlet, as Maitland referred to it, commented both on the community and church in Livingston and reflected Maitland's commitment to the ecumenical movement. The pamphlet also appears to have heavily influenced his second work on Livingston, New Beginnings: Breaking Through to Unity.

Maitland first submitted the manuscript for Living Stones to St Andrew's Press in Edinburgh in 1984 but, for reasons not stated, the manuscript was rejected. After gaining views and feedback from friends within the Church of Scotland, Maitland continued to work on the piece through 1984 before submitting it to Ronald Ferguson of Wild Goose Publications, the fledgling publishing house of the Iona Community. Here Maitland received some critical feedback - the length of the work, which was between an article and a book - was a major concern. Despite this reserve, Wild Goose published the pamphlet in 1985.

The finished pamphlet was arranged up into the following sections:

Foreword by the Very Rev John McIntyre, of Edinburgh University.

Community Life (which consists of):
Forum
Lanthorn
Other Centres of Community
Growing up in Livingston

Church Life (which consists of) :
