AdminHistoryMaitland was always a keen writer. In the laureation address for the award of his honorary doctorate at the University of Edinburgh in 1969, mention is made of his work "Caring for People", which highlights his focus on caring for people and human concern and was present in all his work. He submitted several articles to the Church of Scotland's magazine, Life and Work during his working life and, with his retirement in 1983, he had time to write two major works: "Living Stones: Unity where it matters" and "New Beginnings: Breaking Through to Unity". Both of these combine an arguement for the benefits of ecumencialism in the modern church at the same time as advocating for the building of a strong community life.

In addition, Maitland wrote articles designed for the general public and which were submitted to local and national newspapers.
