AdminHistoryThe Engineering Department was an independent department from the creation of the Corporation in 1962 until 1988, at which point it was folded into the newly created Technical Directorate. There were three Chief Engineers, D D Paterson (1963-1969); J Munro (1969-1984) and N C Bowman (1984-1988). After Bowman left the Corporation it was felt that there was no longer the need for an engineer at Chief Officer level.

The Engineering Department gave specialist technical advice to the Corporation and ensured that the appropriate standards were met in terms of materials, types of construction and installation of services. Engineering Department activities included:

1) Functioning as the engineer in terms of all contracts, under the Institute of Civil Engineers conditions of contract.
2) Providing a structural and civil engineering service to the architects' department.
3) To provide designs for building warrant purposes.
4) To liaise with outside bodies, particularly Lothian Regional Council.
5) Provide a land survey service to the Corporation.
6) To provide a geotechnical service to the Corporation.
7) To provide advice to the Planning Department on Engineering issues.
8) To provide advice to the housing department on structural issues.
