AdminHistoryLivingston's Countryside Ranger Service was opened in 1987 with aid from a grant made by the Countryside Commission. The first Countryside Ranger was Dr Ken Thomson, with a PHD in Ecology from Edinburgh University. The service was, at first, based in Livingston Mill Farm. The duties of the ranger were to manage areas of designated countryside within the town and encourage residents to use them fully and properly.

In 1995 the Countryside Ranger Service was preparing for transferral to West Lothian Council's Recreation and Leisure Department.
