ActivityLivingston and District Rugby Football Club was formed in 1968 as a result of work by Jack Nixon, Youth Officer of the West Lothian County Council in the 1960s. An advert placed in the paper appealed for the creation of a club in the new town of Livingston. Members present at the formation of the club included members of the Bathgate Rugby Football Club, then playing in Aidrie, and several members of the Livingston Development Corporation. 'District' was included in the name of the club to represent that players from outside Livingston were welcome to join - though this was later dropped with no effect on membership. The club joined the Edinburgh and District Union in 1968, playing away from home until a pitch could be found. The first home pitch was a field near Bankton Mains farm - the fields used to graze livestock during the week and the farm converted into changing rooms by voluntary labour. In 1974 the Livingston Development Corporation paid £12500 towards a total cost of £29500 for a playing field and clubhouse - on condition of the money being matched by Midlothian County Council and Sports Council for Scotland.
